As the world grappled with COVID-19 virus outbreak and implemented necessary actions, it inadvertently posed additional challenges in controlling environmental pollution due to the surge in plastic waste. Over time, world’s plastic production has grown from 2 million tons in 1950 to about 380 million tons in 2019 and an estimated 400.3 million tons in 2022. Conventional method of plastic waste management includes plastic landfilling, incineration, pyrolysis, gasification, mechanical reprocessing and bioremediation. These methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Due to the limitation of conventional method of plastic waste management, emerging techniques such as microwave-assisted conversion, plasma-assisted conversion, supercritical water conversion, photo reforming, compatibilization, polymer design and modification were proposed as effective alternative to plastic waste management. Though, adequate protective measures were taken to protect human lives during the COVID-19 economic lockdown, severe environmental challenges emanated from the wide use of disposable plastic materials; it was a case of solving a problem but creating another problem.
