Challenges and Perspectives for Mitigating the Footprints of Plastic Wastes Produced by COVID-19 Pandemic

Plastics are manufactured using non-renewable resources such as fossil fuels with human interaction. Because of their widespread accessibility and characteristics like as low weight and high durability, they have been utilized in several industries ranging from packaging to medical and pharmaceutical sectors. The ongoing COVID-19 epidemic has led to a surge in the need for medical supplies such as masks, gloves, syringes, and personal protective equipment. However, the increased demand has also led to a greater quantity of garbage being produced. There have been over 8 million tonnes of plastic garbage produced as of 2021. Consequently, it is critical to ensure the secure dispersal of plastic wastes, which have been generated due to the pandemic, through the implementation of environmentally sustainable and energy-efficient methods. These methods should also be applied to medical-grade plastics, which also have the added benefit of being energy-efficient. The two current methods used to dispose of plastic trash associated with COVID-19 are landfilling or burning. This results in the emission of noxious gases, contributing to the phenomenon of global warming. Presently, plastic trash is either disposed of in landfills or subjected to incineration. Plastic trash has undergone recycling, pyrolysis, and chemical treatments involving hydrogen peroxide and ozone. Biobased polymers have also been utilized. As an alternative, there are several techniques for efficiently managing plastic garbage in an environmentally friendly way. These practices encompass the implementation of plastic waste segregation at its origin, utilization of bio-based polymers, and other similar measures. By employing a comprehensive strategy that incorporates these methods alongside regional regulations, it is possible to effectively decrease and manage the overall energy impact of plastic trash production. Hence the aim of this chapter is to discuss and summarize the effects of Covid-19 related plastic wastes and the latest developments to dispose of such wastes in an energy efficient and environmentally friendly manner.
