Discrimination and Social Harm

We are currently witnessing heightened hostilities within the UK towards refugees and minority groups, leaving many from our communities feeling frightened, insecure and vulnerable. This chapter documents such concerns in the context of housing. Not only have refugees experienced direct discrimination in their neighbourhoods, but they have also been disenfranchised through housing policy and by some housing actors. Through this, refugees have become dehumanised, reflecting wider anti-immigration discourses. This has been most evident for those who have been through the asylum process. We point also to the intersection of race and class, to illustrate how the experiences of refugees are shared by other lower socio-economic groups. However, it is imperative we also recognise the resilience and strength shown by refugees in embarking on their new life in the UK.
