摘要

How important are those initial experiences of housing for refugees in terms of their transitions to secure and long-term housing? This chapter considers this question in light of the diverse range of experiences where refugees face both challenges and opportunities. Resettlement schemes have varied over time, but it is clear that they do provide a more tailored intervention to support new arrivals into housing. We also document the impact of the 28-day move-on period for former asylum seekers, in the context of limited appropriate and affordable housing, austerity and the residualisation of social housing. It is also important to acknowledge the increasing challenges organisations and statutory bodies face in supporting refugees in those early stages of arrival. We also draw attention to the diversity and heterogeneity of the refugee population.
