In a context in which higher education institutions intend to offer their graduates quality education, the need for a close connection between the training provided and the professional context in which the graduates will carry out their activity is highlighted. Study plans must be designed in order to develop hard and soft skills required and useful in the professional context and one of the ways to make teaching more practical, motivating and adapted to the professional world is through internships. Through the case study methodology, this investigation aims to report the internship experience of a Portuguese polytechnic degree, in the area of Information Science – Sciences and Technologies of Documentation and Information (STDI), identifying the type of institutions in which the internships take place, the skills developed by the students and their application with a view to respond to the current problems and challenges of organizations. The results highlight the diversity of institutions in which students can develop their activity, proving that the area of Information is transversal to all of them. They also show that the Information Professional’s performance profiles are aligned with Professional Standards, such as the Euroguide LIS (ECIA, 2004), contributing, in practice, to the resolution of organizational problems, within the scope of information management and technology. In conclusion, the experience of guiding and monitoring interns proves the advantages of close contact and necessary dialogue between the academic and professional worlds, in which both interlocutors gain, at various levels, from the established partnerships.
