Education is one of the pillars on which the development of society rests. Teaching methodologies and complements have been modernized with the arrival of new technologies to improve student training. The teaching-learning processes have been innovated over the years, and positive academic results have been achieved by integrating dynamic resources, such as social media. These digital platforms have resources that favor the development of human capabilities and skills through the availability of interactive information and the possibility of co-operating with virtual communities by creating valuable content. The educational community must become digitally literate to properly use the digital resources available on the internet, understanding that the premise of social media in education is to help the cognitive development of the student but not a resource that limits academic development. In this sense, this paper proposes a review of how social media complements and influences the teaching-learning processes, with teachers being the main actors in teaching and digital literacy among students.
