摘要

This study explores green roof technologies in mitigating urban heat island effects and enhancing rainwater management in Catania's Mediterranean climate. It assesses three technologies – Draining Modules, Green Safe, and Experimental Technologies – for sustainable urban development. Utilizing a comprehensive sensor array, the study monitors temperature, water content, and thermal flows in green roof layers, offering insights into their performance. Conducted at the University of Catania's Bioscientific Hub, this research addresses the under-explored effectiveness of green roofs in Mediterranean climates. Evaluating green roof technologies under typical Mediterranean autumn conditions, the study finds that certain technologies significantly aid in maintaining substrate moisture and regulating temperatures, thus promoting urban sustainability. The research holds implications for urban planning, environmental policy, and green roof technology development, highlighting green roofs’ role in climate change adaptation and urban resilience, particularly in Mediterranean settings. Notwithstanding limitations like short monitoring duration and site-specific conditions, the study emphasizes the need for extended research across various seasons and locations. In conclusion, the research, offering valuable insights for green roof design and implementation, contributes to more sustainable and resilient urban environments. Its validation within the Building Future Lab, under the supervision of its Scientific Manager and as part of the METABUILDING Labs project within the HORIZON 2020 program, also earns it ISO 9000 Process Certification, affirming its adherence to international standards.
