A New Workflow for Human and Atmospheric Well-Being Through Urban Regeneration Actions. The Study of the PNACC and the Experimentation of Climate Simulations for the Definition of Adaptive Technologies in the Pre-Design Phase

The projections of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report highlight how global warming and climate change can destabilize ecosystems, causing negative impacts on biodiversity and human health and the environment. To reduce the impact that cities have on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, it is necessary to develop innovative and resilient Urban Regeneration actions, with a “Climate Adaptation” project, aimed at improving both human and atmospheric well-being. Through a review of current practices and emerging trends, the studio introduces an innovative and interdisciplinary workflow that utilizes the regenerative design principles developed in the ABITAlab applied research paths. The workflow integrates the analysis of strategic measures, green and grey, regulations and adaptive design protocols in accordance with the National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change, (PNACC) with Climate Risk analyses, through regenerative digital models and predictive climate simulations, for the assessment of impacts, with the aim of defining a set of application-design actions to address performance for human comfort in urban context and atmospheric well-being. The experimentation has been applied in different areas of the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria for the definition of “site-specific” Adaptive Strategies and Technologies (TRL experience and ReKAP in ABITAlab). Therefore, the results provide valuable information for the application of evaluation strategies deriving from the PNACC contributing to the construction of a dataset of meta-project actions, which, implemented in different climatic contexts, respond with improvement projects at different scales: human, environmental and atmospheric.
