The Impact of Safe Pedestrian Environment on the Competitiveness of Contemporary Residential Districts: Case Study - Al-Amal Residential Neighborhood in Basra City

Urban competitiveness is considered one of the primary factors influencing the appeal of contemporary residential neighborhoods. Studies have indicated that neighborhoods providing a safe and healthy environment for pedestrians tend to be the most competitive in attracting residents and enhancing the city’s image. Therefore, this study explored the conceptual definition of a safe pedestrian environment and urban competitiveness. The research problem focused on the “Impact of a Safe Pedestrian Environment on the Competitiveness of Residential neighborhoods”. To address this issue, several effective indicators were derived based on the analysis of previous studies and their findings regarding indicators of achieving a safe pedestrian environment in competitive residential neighborhoods. The key terms included providing housing services, humanized design, and residential street design. The study adopted a qualitative approach for data collection and analysis, utilizing descriptive methods and a case study technique, along with a survey of residents’ opinions based on the theoretical framework. The results revealed that the safe pedestrian environment in residential neighborhoods in Basra City includes integrated housing services that encourage pedestrian movement. However, there is a need for significant improvement in humane design and residential street design.
