Water Pollution: Transportation, Fate and Its Hazardous Impacts on the Biosphere

摘要

Our planet’s water resources are under siege. Transportation of pollutants from various sources contaminates rivers, lakes, and oceans, disrupting the delicate balance of the biosphere. This abstract explores the pathways by which pollutants travel (transport), their persistence and transformation in water (fate), and the devastating consequences they have on all living things (hazardous impacts) According to a UN report, by 2050, almost half of the world's population will be living in areas experiencing water scarcity. This scarcity is further exacerbated by pollution, rendering freshwater sources unusable for drinking, irrigation, and aquatic life. This work will delve into the various modes of transportation, such as runoff from agricultural lands laden with fertilizers and pesticides, or industrial discharges containing heavy metals and toxic chemicals. It will then explore the fate of these pollutants, including how they degrade, accumulate in sediments, or travel through the food chain. Finally, the chapter will highlight the hazardous impacts on the biosphere, including disruption of ecosystems, endangerment of aquatic species, and potential human health risks. By understanding the transport, fate, and hazardous impacts of water pollution, we can develop strategies to mitigate this growing threat. This chapter aims to raise awareness of this critical issue and pave the way for a cleaner, healthier future for our water resources and the biosphere they sustain.
