This is a chapter on field extensions. After an introductory section on the relation between roots and reducible polynomials, attention is moved to algebraic extensions and closures. It is shown how field extensions serve as obstructions to classical problems in plane geometry, i.e. constructions by ruler and compass. Splitting fields, normal and separable extensions are studied. Multiple roots and finite fields are also discussed.
