Unseen Realities: Visual Narratives of Hispanic Students in Emerging HSI Spaces

Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) are pivotal in addressing the socioeconomic and educational needs of Hispanic/Latine students, many of whom are first generation. However, the effectiveness of HSIs in fostering inclusive environments varies significantly. This chapter employs Photovoice methodology to exemplify ways in which practitioners can amplify the voices of Hispanic students at emerging HSIs, providing a platform for them to express their experiences through photography and narrative. The chapter draws from a focus group of six Hispanic/Latine students, whose visual and textual narratives highlight both the supportive and challenging aspects of their campus environments. Findings underscore the need for HSIs to go beyond enrollment metrics and embrace practices that genuinely enhance Hispanic students’ sense of belonging and academic success. Key themes include the importance of cultural representation, the role of supportive faculty and staff, and the persistent racialized experiences within campus spaces. The chapter advocates and gives examples for the integration of Photovoice in policy evaluation and institutional practices to create more inclusive and equitable educational environments for Hispanic students. By capturing and presenting students’ lived realities, the chapter provides valuable insights into how emerging HSIs can better serve their Hispanic/Latine student populations.
