For a Decolonial Federalism: The Algerian Debate and the Rejection of Nationalism

This chapter offers the reader a comprehensive reconstruction of Camusian positions on the Algerian issue, aiming to counter the criticisms of colonialism, imperialism, and Eurocentrism directed at him during his life. As the chapter shows, Camus ultimately defined a decolonial federalist position, which was at odds with anticolonial nationalism and its Eurocentric mindset. Camus’ goal, in particular, was to build a trans-Mediterranean federation with a common citizenship for all individuals living in its territory and with autonomous and equal political branches for African and European regions.
