Youth

This chapter examines the unique conceptualization of youth in Africa, highlighting how African perspectives on youth extend beyond age to encompass social roles and responsibilities. Africa, with the world’s youngest population, faces both opportunities and challenges associated with its youth demographic. Historically, African youth have been viewed through narratives tied to social struggles, conflict, and economic exclusion. Yet, recent shifts showcase youth as dynamic agents of change, particularly in technology and entertainment, where they are leveraging globalization to gain prominence and redefine the role of Africa on the global stage. The chapter explores three key dimensions: (1) Africa as a young democracy, where youth are vocal in advocating for transparency and democratic reforms; (2) Africa’s youthful demographic potential, which, if harnessed, could result in a substantial demographic dividend; and (3) Africa as a talent-rich continent, especially in digital and creative sectors. Through a qualitative lens, the chapter emphasizes that African youth are both a reflection of, and a force within, the evolving socio-economic landscape of the continent. Concluding with policy recommendations, the chapter calls for inclusive approaches that recognize youth as central to the development of Africa, urging investments in education, innovation, and political empowerment to unlock their full potential.
