Examining Female Genital Mutilation Laws and Improving Policing Responses

In the complex tapestry of combating Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), this work serves as a comprehensive exploration of the evolution of laws surrounding FGM. Beginning with a review of the definitions of FGM, this delves into the intricate legislative landscapes that have sought to address and eradicate this practice. This chapter traces the evolving legal frameworks that have aimed to safeguard individuals at risk and hold perpetrators accountable. This chapter explores FGM through survivor perspectives, providing a poignant lens through which readers can understand the lived experiences of those affected. In the latter part of the chapter, the focus shifts towards strategies for enhancing police responses in FGM cases by recognising the unique challenges of law enforcement responses to FGM. Finally, this work points to resources for improved training, collaboration, and community engagement, laying the groundwork for a more empathetic, effective and survivor-centric approach to addressing FGM by the criminal justice system.
