Landscape Architects’ Role in Mitigating Coastal Climate Change

Our atmosphere is changing, and the frequency of natural hazards is increasing. Coastal communities are among the most affected by these hydrometeorological hazards. For instance, rising sea levels can cause storm surges, leading to coastal flooding, erosion, infrastructure damage, and population displacement. Notably, the impact of climate change, which has heightened the frequency and intensity of these storm surges through constant sea level rise, has increased vulnerability and challenges for these communities. This article is carried out through qualitative analysis to discuss the importance and potential of landscape architecture in mitigating climate change through NBS interventions and provided case studies. The article is considered the first step in a journey that will eventually propose an innovative nature-based solution from the perspective of the landscape architecture field. This field has proven its crucial role in mitigating challenges posed by climate change through innovative design, strategic planning, and a commitment to sustainability. In conclusion, this article not only offers an initial review of the current state of mitigating climate change from the perspective of landscape architecture but also serves as a gateway to future investigations and research in the Mediterranean region, paving the way for a better sustainable future.
