Optimal Sites Selection for Photovoltaic Panels: A Review Between AI and Geomatics Methodologies

Climate change and the increasingly frequent environmental disasters require monitoring of the territory through especially preventive actions. Renewable energy production plants are no exception and, given the long duration of each individual project, require adaptive techniques for selecting the most suitable areas for their installation. Modern geomatic techniques are certainly the most suitable for retrieving data as they allow remote real-time acquisition with a high degree of accuracy. This paper is part of this framework and analyzes in detail the advantages and disadvantages of the most recent techniques considered “gold standard” for this type of problem. Furthermore, interesting comparisons with the most innovative artificial intelligence techniques will be provided. .
