Innovative Approach to Cultural Accessibility: A Study on the Use of an Augmented Reality App for People with Disabilities

In recent years, there has been an increased emphasis on the management (monitoring, control, and prevention) of land, artefacts, and cultural property. As a result, there is a greater understanding of the importance of implementing effective monitoring systems and preventive measures to protect and preserve the land, artefacts, and cultural heritage, as well as technologies and tools (VR/AR/MR) for disseminating the information gathered. In the context of an ever-increasing dissemination of knowledge, conservation and diffusion of cultural heritage, it is important to break down the obstacles (such as architectural barriers) that stand in the way of the full dissemination of this knowledge, including physical obstacles that prevent disadvantaged individuals from fully enjoying these opportunities. The use of advanced technologies, particularly augmented reality applications, to improve accessibility to works of art for individuals with visual, hearing or cognitive disabilities, represents an example of technological innovation. Scientific literature examines the development of these applications, analyzing both their advantages and disadvantages. Some specific studies investigate the factors that influence the use of augmented reality apps by visitors, highlighting the importance of elements such as enjoyment, content relevance, performance and effort to positively influence the use of the app. In the context of this study, the idea was born to develop an augmented reality application to make works of art within museums and churches accessible to people with visual and hearing disabilities. This app, using advanced recognition and artificial intelligence technologies, provides visitors with a tablet that allows them to explore and understand works of art.
