UAV-Enhanced Geomatics for Real-Time Monitoring and Preservation of Buildings

The substantial threats posed by changing weather patterns to land, infrastructure, cultural sites, have become increasingly apparent. However, there is a growing acknowledgement of the importance of implementing effective monitoring systems and preventive measures to safeguard and preserve lands, artifacts and cultural sites. To reach this aim, is necessary to involve the use of advanced Geomatics technologies and techniques to provide accurate and real-time data acquisition. In addition, the integration of UAV or drone technology has emerged as a key component of this comprehensive approach. The use of UAVs combined with high resolution camera and sensors like, LIDAR, can rapidly provide accurate information. This real-time data acquisition is crucial to enhance the effectiveness of monitoring systems and preventive measures. Lastly, UAVs offer a unique vantage point, allowing for precise and efficient surveys of vast or inaccessible areas. Drones are also suitable in the framework of urban surveying, in combination with software running “Computer vision” or SFM algorithm [1, 2]. The use of this algorithms allows to process the drone’s images and to recreate high detailed 3D models of places and/or objects of interest. This procedure enables a quick and cheaper reconstruction of land, buildings, archaeological interest site and further. Anyway, even though the use of UAV and UAV photogrammetry is largely used in surveying sectors such as inspections [3], monitoring and controls [4], is not so diffused in infrastructure’s measurement.
