A Contemporary Analysis of Morocco's and South Africa's Current Public Transport Systems

Currently, the demand for transport is increasing day by day due to several factors. Rapid urbanization is one of the main contributors to this increase, as more and more people move to urban areas in search of economic opportunities. Moreover, the rising socio-economic level of the population also plays a key role in this trend, as it allows more people to access means of transport. To meet this growing demand, there are several means of transport available. Individuals have the possibility to use either private transport, such as cars and motorcycles, or public transport, including buses, taxis, trams, and trains. The choice of public transport usually depends on several criteria. First, the price of the journey is an essential factor to be considered, as it can influence the decisions of users. Public transport systems in use in Morocco and South Africa represent a case study aimed at shedding light on different modes of public transport (conventional or new). This projection brings us to the following points: (1) South African community uses public transport systems more than the Moroccan community. (2) Morocco and South Africa have a high bus usage rate and have a combination of regular buses and a new solution called Bus Rapid Transit, or “BRT”. (3) Both countries have a variety of taxis. (4) Rail transport is modern in both countries. They have high-speed trains. (5) South Africa has a wider road and rail network than Morocco, with a higher road density in South Africa. However, Morocco has implemented an urban tramway system. This paper presents a comparison of different public transport systems in Morocco and South Africa. It prepares an initial basis of significant and essential indicators for the future development of an intelligent transport system aimed at improving the mobility of individuals.
