Assessment of Human Errors in a Cable Manufacturing Organisation

In a cable manufacturing environment, human errors are somewhat prevalent, which most of the time result in cable defect production, rework, and scrap. Systematic classification of human errors in a cable manufacturing environment, which play a key role to effectively resolve them using smart solutions is still a grey research area. In light of this, this study holistically appraises the myriads of human errors that emanate during cable manufacturing. In order to achieve this, the end-to-end processes deployed to produce cable in a manufacturing organisation was observed for a period of a month. On the one hand, the result of the human error assessment in cable manufacturing revealed that perception of types and quantities human error, memory-related human error and perception of states human error are the critical human errors that occur when producing cable. On the other hand, the human error assessment exercise revealed that incorrect machine operational settings, non-preparation of machine for production, usage of wrong tooling for cable production, usage of contaminated materials, non-inspection of the received raw materials for all quality-related parameters, and usage of wrong quantity of colouring ink on a cable are typical examples of human errors that results into cable defect production in an organisation.
