Evaluation of PCD Micro Drill Fabrication Using Line-Ultra Laser Technology

This study focuses on the significant transformation that has occurred in the industrial production of PCD (polycrystalline diamond) tools, which were traditionally manufactured using grinding processes on milling machines. In recent years, with the advancement in laser processing applications and the increased reliability of laser control, the industry has undergone a major shift. Micro PCD tools, made of polycrystalline diamond material, require extremely high stability and are time-consuming to manufacture using grinding processes. However, with the transition to laser manufacturing, not only has production efficiency greatly improved, but precision has also been enhanced to a finer degree. In this research, PCD micro-drills were fabricated using EWAG line-ultra laser technology, and their accuracy was evaluated by comparing the design parameters with those obtained post-fabrication using the Keyence VR-6000. Our investigation revealed minimal differences in the produced PCD micro-drills, amounting to only 0.3%. These findings have crucial implications for future advancements in manufacturing processes. Furthermore, we anticipate that this research will not only benefit similar processes but also foster more efficient development and research across various industries.
