Social media have created an ideal communication environment for individuals and institutions. The literature review on the use of social media by local authorities recorded that these platforms offer a variety of democratic opportunities for governmental organizations, particularly at the local level, in their ability to increase transparency and citizen participation and strengthen e-administration. However, effective implementation of social media remains a challenge, particularly in public sector organizations. The success, efficiency and operation of these new networking platforms require particular attention, especially at the lowest level of the scale, which is the local territory. However, our results show that the use of social media by local authorities to ensure citizen involvement and participation requires the implementation of a real policy and a good framework to achieve this goal.

摘要
