This transition holds profound implications for both energy independence and geopolitics, necessitating strategic actions to harness opportunities and overcome challenges. Emergence of hydrogen as a crucial clean energy source is projected to attract trillions in investments by 2050, with the potential to revolutionize the energy industry. This shift toward green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis with renewable energy (RnE), presents unparalleled environmental benefits but faces cost-related barriers. To address these challenges, substantial investments are driving the scaling of hydrogen production. As RnE expands, it becomes evident that not all sectors can directly transition to electricity, highlighting the importance of renewable electricity-based fuels. Power-to-liquid (PtL) technologies play a fundamental role in converting RnE into liquid fuels, contributing to a viable solution to meet diverse sectoral demands. In addition, a carbon–neutral approach to critical processes, such as water desalination, relies on harvesting CO2 from the atmosphere. This manuscript explores the global transition to RnE and the rising prominence of hydrogen, emphasizing the geopolitical implications. It highlights the pressing need for proactive policies and strategic investments to fully leverage the potential of renewable energy and hydrogen technologies.
