Introduction

The Introduction explains the aim of the book as showing that humor gives us privileged access to the deepest kind of truth, including that of the deepest kind of value. As a consequence of this access, it also allows a privileged coordination or balancing, and negotiation, of profoundly conflicting truths and values. The Introduction then gives a summary of the chapters to follow and of their general organization.
