The Call for Help in Organizations; The Ongoing Patriarchy and Gender Stereotypes Women Face Within Cyprus

  • Avgi Kamberi

摘要

Patriarchy is an ongoing issue integrated into economic, political, and social systems that delve into gender inequality and stereotypes. Companies in Cyprus have heavily relied on male managerial roles, diminishing female managerial talent due to the engrained cultural stereotypes that prevent females from broadening their networks. From politics to the economy and social systems, women in Cyprus have been excluded from decision-making, promoting their rights and voices being heard. Research has proven diachronically that women are not only undermined by male perceptions within the workplace but also through organizational cultures as well (Babic, 202). The perception that women are physically weaker than men, as men have the power and ability to cope with certain tasks, still dominates individuals’ and organisations’ behaviours. Some of these beliefs are still exemplified concerning the gender pay gap, where women predominantly work in lower-pay positions. Even in politics, Cyprus is amongst the three EU countries with the lowest female representation in politics (Pavlou, 205). It is vital to comprehend these unequal behaviours within the context of the workplace to deteriorate patriarchal beliefs for a more engaging workforce, minimize gender stereotypes for an open and inclusive culture and allow personnel to thrive without prejudicial systems. This will enable the empowerment of Cypriot women within the workforce to challenge this patriarchal status and build awareness around the oppression women face up to this day within the workplace as well.
