Experimental Phenomenology: The Dissertation on Binocular Depth Perception

In this chapter, we focus on Linschoten’s dissertation (Ph.D. Thesis) finished in 1956. After a false start, which we explain in Sect. 6.1, Linschoten started working on it 3 or 4 years earlier. Because his dissertation is a voluminous and complicated work, we first briefly overview its structure in Sect. 6.2. In Sect. 6.3, we discuss Linschoten’s approach to depth perception. Section 6.4 discusses the 130 experiments Linschoten conducted to test theories of his own and others that explore the structure of depth perception. His theory of depth perception (and localization) is summarized in Sects. 6.5, and 6.6 briefly concludes his thesis’s place in his development and other works.
