Implications, New Opportunities, and Insights

This final chapter pauses to reflect on the key contributions made by the different components that make up this study. In terms of key findings, the outcomes from the systematic review reveal that procedural justice training works unevenly depending on the police population and role. In terms of testing the influence of procedural justice training on officer perceptions of self-legitimacy, the findings suggest no significant effects across the various self-legitimacy dimensions. However, the evidence associated with the testing of procedural justice training on audience legitimacy indicates a willingness amongst highly specialist officers to adapt their behaviours and style of policing delivery. In its entirety, this research embraces the challenge of communicating the wider framework of legitimacy, pursues new opportunities, and presents new evidence through the investigation of the role of procedural justice through the medium of training, particularly as an enabler of audience legitimacy. Finally, it offers a compelling platform for the research community to build on this research: performing more frequent and rigorous testing of procedural justice training interventions, extending procedural justice training research to non-Western settings, and utilising other sub-populations that reflect the increasing plurality of policing.
