\(\gamma\) -Valerolactone (GVL)

\(\gamma\) -Valerolactone (GVL) is a natural product which has a five-membered lactone ring. It can be synthesized from cellulose and hemicellulose biomass via the intermediates of hydroxymethylfurfual (HMF) or furfural. GVL has been used as a solvent in biomass conversions, metal-catalyzed reactions, and biocatalytic synthesis.
