Valorisation of Animal Waste for Energy and Material Recovery

摘要

Animal waste has the potential to yield a variety of renewable energy sources and material applications. Biogas can be produced from waste and used as a renewable energy source, while the solid fraction can be used as a fertilizer or a source of organic matter for soil improvement. The combustion of animal waste can produce heat and electricity, making it a promising source of renewable energy. Furthermore, animal fat can be converted into biodiesel, which can be used as a transportation fuel. Additionally, animal waste can undergo thermochemical conversion processes such as pyrolysis and gasification, to produce syngas or biochar, which can be utilized as feedstock for the production of biofuels or as a soil amendment for agriculture. Animal by-products and waste can also be a source of valuable biomolecules, which can be utilized in a range of applications. For instance, animal blood, bones, and hides contain collagen, which can be extracted and used in the production of gelatine, a widely used protein in food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. In addition, animal fat, particularly from fish waste, contains high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids such as omega-3, which are essential nutrients for human health. These fatty acids can be fractionated and used as an ingredient in functional foods and nutraceuticals. Moreover, animal waste can also be a source of enzymes, hormones, and growth factors, which can be utilized in various industrial and biomedical applications. The development of these biomolecules not only adds value to animal by-products but also offers new opportunities for the production of sustainable products with potential health benefits. The development of these renewable energy sources can mitigate the reliance on non-renewable energy sources, can contribute to the development of a circular economy and offer a sustainable solution for waste management in the animal farming industry.
