The Conversion in Indigenous Communities: Enhancing Social Work Practice Through Intersectionality, Cultural Competence, and Ethical Considerations

This chapter investigates the complicated phenomena of religious conversion among Orang Asli and Santal indigenous groups, focusing on the ethical and practical issues it presents to social work practitioners. Using intersectionality and cultural competency frameworks, the chapter investigates how social workers may manage the different experiences and vulnerabilities of persons experiencing conversion. The chapter analyzes academic and activist viewpoints to identify critical ethical concerns such as power relations, informed consent, and cultural sensitivity. Finally, it recommends techniques for improving social work practice in this environment, such as providing culturally appropriate assistance and advocating for the well-being of those experiencing religious transition in their communities.
