Cutaneous warts (verrucae) are benign epidermal tumors resulting from human papillomavirus (HPV) infection of keratinocytes. Verruca that affects the nail unit may be periungual, involving the lateral and proximal nail folds, or subungual, occurring underneath the nail plate [1]. Subungual warts comprise a relatively small fraction of all verruca; a cross-sectional analysis of 108 patients estimated that only approximately 5% of verruca are subungual [2]. Periungual and subungual warts are most commonly caused by HPV subtypes 1, 2, 4, 24, and 57. HPV subtypes 16, 18, 52, 58, and 73 are rare causes and are associated with malignant transformation to squamous cell carcinoma. Butcher’s warts, which are hand warts associated with meat handling professions, are caused by HPV subtype 7 and may occasionally involve the nail unit [1].
