The Loop but Not the Lifeworld

Critics are looking to modify the current state of AI. The fear is that AI will become autonomous and fail to meet the needs of users (Winner 1977; Noble 2018; Marcus and Davis 2019). On the one hand, algorithms have become “black boxes” that few persons, even their creators, understand (Murphy and Largacha-Martínez 2024). Others believe that AI has exhibited skills that surpass human abilities, and therefore gradually persons will be eclipsed by this technology. Losing jobs is thus only part of the problem, with doomsday scenarios lurking in the background (Vincent 2019; Zhang and Dafoe 2019; Roose 2021). With the assistance of AI, robots and other devices will displace persons and become the centerpieces of key institutions.
