What is the message of this book? A key idea is that AI development has been guided by a problematic philosophy. For the most part, this outlook has been operating behind the scenes. After all, lately, the focus of AI has been the resolution of technical issues (Winograd and Flores 1987). This pragmatic orientation is not necessarily conducive to emphasizing theory, when real technical problems need to be tackled.
