Introduction

This book is a throwback to the time when Terry Winograd (1996) believed so-called high theory was an important part of discussions about computer technology. Likewise, this work may also fall under a heading or rubric used nowadays, that is, culture and artificial intelligence (AI). But the reader can judge the proper label. What is actually occurring is that philosophy, along with sociological and AI theory, and some history, is invoked to interrogate some important issues facing the development and application of AI.
