The State, Violence and the Evolution of Warfare

This chapter seeks to unpack how the relationship between the state, its use of forceUse of force and the use of auxiliary security has shifted historically. It analyses different contexts of security privatization including cases where privateers, mercenariesMercenaries and PMSCs have been employed. The chapter explores the role of the modern state and the evolution of military action, providing a theoretical framework for the empirical elements of this study. It begins by establishing the historical tendencies of states and rulers to use alternate security provisions to meet their security objectives.
