摘要

Despite formal commitments to improving the capability of young Australians in global languages by both state and federal governments over recent decades, the number of students learning languages remains stubbornly low. In this chapter, we systematically examine a significant barrier to achieving policy goals: pathways into language teaching in Australian schools. We first report on the results of a comprehensive review of the academic and grey literature and then discuss the implications of the issues identified in the experiences of teachers of Asian languages in Queensland. We conclude by considering these preliminary findings for shaping a more inclusive, effective, and robust language education system.
