Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Effect on Locomotion and Posture

This chapter explores transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in motor neurorehabilitation for aging and neurological disorders. tDCS uses cathode and anode electrodes on the scalp, delivering low direct current to targeted brain areas. Aging and certain neurological conditions can impact balance control, leading to increased fall risk and reduced mobility. Motor cortex and cerebellum stimulation may improve motor coordination and stability. Modulation of attention and cognitive processing may enhance cognitive-motor integration. In aging and neurological disorders, tDCS holds promise for gait and balance rehabilitation. Combining safety considerations, individualized approaches, and technological integration are essential to enhance tDCS effect on gait and balance training. Further research is needed to determine optimal stimulation parameters and the long-term effects of tDCS in gait and balance neurorehabilitation.
