Second-generation Jewish German immigrant siblings Louis Bamberger (1855–1944) and Caroline Bamberger-Fuld (1864–1944) founded Bamberger Stores headquartered in Newark, New Jersey. In 1928, their department store chain was the nation’s fourth largest. The Bambergers were grateful to their customers, the people of New Jersey. They were involved in charity, building hospitals in the state. Louis was a shy man and never married. Caroline married twice. Both husbands were business partners, but both died without giving her a child. With no heir, the Bamberger siblings decided to retire and devote their lives to philanthropy. They were fortunate to have accumulated a great fortune, and they were lucky to have sold their stores to R.C. Macy’s at a good price just before the stock market crash in 1929. They took out $5 million and planned to establish the first medical school in the State of New Jersey (Fig. 10.1).
