Long COVID-19, also known as post-acute sequelae of SARS-Cov2 infection, is a complex and multifaceted condition in which individuals experience persistent or develop new symptoms and functional impairment long beyond the acute period of COVID-19 infection. Most people recover from COVID-19 within a few weeks of infection, but some individuals, also known as long haulers, continue to experience symptoms for weeks or months afterward. This condition appeared as a challenge to healthcare systems worldwide, with a growing number of individuals experiencing a wide range of symptoms affecting various body systems, including cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, and more. The symptoms may vary from minor fatigue, headaches, loss of taste and smell, heart palpitations, and musculoskeletal pain to significant shortness of breath, chest pain, brain fog, and cognitive dysfunction. The exact cause and underlying mechanism of Long COVID-19 is still poorly understood. However, it is believed to result from several factors, such as persistent inflammation, affected immune system, and severe damage to organs or body tissues. Moreover, the virus may directly damage cells or trigger autoimmune responses that contribute to ongoing symptoms. The management of long COVID-19 can be challenging and involves a multidirectional approach, symptomatic treatment, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and rehabilitation. Vaccine hesitancy due to a lack of trust in the healthcare system and uncertainty related to COVID-19 infection are causes of long-term COVID-19; hence, poor vaccination increases the likelihood of developing long-term COVID-19. Both clinical and public health approaches are needed to overcome the burden of long COVID-19. Public health interventions focus on building trust among the general population, avoiding misinformation, and addressing barriers and concerns that could lead to vaccine hesitancy. In contrast, on the clinical side, further research is needed to understand this phenomenon’s pathophysiology better and develop effective treatments.
