Making Contact: Initiation and the Masters
摘要
In The Sea Priestess Fortune presents an elusive figure called the Priest of the Moon as a Hidden Master, through contact with whom the novel’s hero achieves initiation. In this chapter I will explore the idea of initiatory contacts as they appear in The Sea Priestess. I will discuss the sources Fortune drew on in her construction of Masters and the reasons she chose to portray these initiatory figures in her fiction. I will consider the relationship between initiation and contact in depth, analysing the factors that precipitate contact experience and how these manifested in Fortune’s life and work. I will argue that Fortune wanted to encourage her readers to seek their own initiating contacts and presented instructions on the creation of magical images to this end.
