Analysis of Digital Narratives of Greece’s Worst Train Accident

Industrial accidents are uncommon in Europe as governments invest money in public infrastructure. These investments aim to adopt cutting-edge technologies, improve the services provided to people and make them more cost-efficient and safe. A risk-assessment analysis is needed to invest in the right technology in the railway transportation sector and apply the necessary measures. However, Greece recently had to cope with the deadliest train accident in the Nation’s history, causing sadness worldwide and political turmoil in the Greek parliament. This research aims to analyse the media’s storytelling in the aftermath of the fatal train accident in Tempe to investigate how several actors presented their views to reshape public opinion. The authors conclude that sadness was expressed by the majority of the actors under research and willingness by the state actors to investigate the conditions that led to the industrial accident.
