Migration and Translation: Dowries Between the Ottoman and Habsburg Empires at the End of the Eighteenth Century
摘要
The chapter examines the role of female fortunes in the economic strategies of the Camondo family after their exile from the Ottoman Empire to the Habsburg port city of Trieste in 1782. Following their migration, the Jewish merchant family used dowries to translate and transfer their assets from the Ottoman into the Habsburg context. Such translation and transmission of female fortunes enabled the family to receive wholesale trading permit and a toleration—reserved merely for wealthy Jewish families in the Habsburg Empire. The case study demonstrates how trans-imperial migration did not only involve the physical mobility of women but also the mobility of their records and various legal traditions between East and West.
