Electric power systems are typical cyber-physical systems, and their operation largely depends on the communication and information systems that provide observability and controllability. These capabilities would facilitate the perception and comprehension of the information for current and future status projection of the system. This so-called situational awareness capability is especially critical for the power system to respond and recover from extreme events. With the development of grid modernization, advanced sensing technologies as well as new communication technologies will improve the observability and controllability of the grid, which help facilitate the recovery of the power grid, and thus improve its resilience. On the other hand, the occurrence of extreme events such as natural disasters or malicious attacks will also impact cyber systems including the sensors and communication networks, so the recovery of communication networks is also important for load restoration. This chapter will introduce the advanced sensors and communication recovery technologies and discuss how they will enhance situational awareness and improve power system resilience via examples.
