Ireland and the Channel Islands

Ireland was slow to develop public libraries outside the cities. Some landowners, chiefly in Ulster, did lend out books while many chapel libraries were found in Catholic parishes in the south. After 1900 a determined effort to found village libraries began, later supported by Carnegie. Guernsey in the Channel Islands was the home of two significant public endowed book collections with the Guille-Allès and Priaulx libraries.
