The chronological development of free voluntary libraries for the general public in English towns is charted, including institutions in Gloucester, Lewes, Bath, High Wycombe, Hinckley, Hull, the Isle of Wight, Stroud, Moretonhampstead, and many more towns; and also in Blennerhasset, a particularly curious venture, and Malvern.
