Magnetic resonance neurography, often known as “MRN” or “MR imaging of the nerves,” refers to MR imaging dedicated to the nerves. It is a technique that uses pulse sequences from diffusion imaging, three-dimensional imaging, and two-dimensional imaging to improve selective multiplanar visualization of the nerve itself and its potentially pathological relationships with surrounding structures. The need for MRN is being driven by referring physicians who are looking for imaging methods that can portray and diagnose nerve disorders better than traditional MR imaging. In this chapter, we review the definition, indications, protocol/technical considerations, potential impact, imaging appearance, and examples of MRN abnormalities. Finally, we review important anatomical considerations in the assessment of brachial and lumbar plexus variants that can potentially be visualized with MRN.
