The nervus fibularis communis (common peroneal nerve) is found in the distal thigh just posterior to the biceps tendon. At the level of the neck of the fibula, it branches into the nervus fibularis superficialis (posteriorly) and the profundus (anteriorly). The nervus fibularis superficialis travels toward the lateral compartment of the leg, first localized in the fibularis longus muscle; then, it is found between the fibularis longus and brevis, and finally, usually at the midlevel of the leg, it travels just posterior to the anterior intermuscular septum. At the level of the distal third of the leg, it perforates the superficial aponeurosis to become subcutaneous where it divides into two branches, nervus cutaneous dorsalis medialis and nervus cutaneous dorsalis intermedius of the foot, which travel distally toward the dorsal aspect of the ankle and foot.
