Film musicals always had a close relationship with their stage counterpart, and Britain has been no exception. In recent years, adaptations of extremely successful stage shows such as Mamma Mia! (2008), Les Misérables (2012) and Cats (2019) have exploited the existing profile and readymade audience created by the stage original. However, in both cases they have made significant changes to the original, following essential transpositions between media. Although many are unaware of it, British film musicals were the most popular of home-made films in the 1930s, and have had a chequered history since that time, occasionally making for massive international hits (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang [1968], The Rocky Horror Picture Show [1975]).
