In the 1980s and 1990s, avant-garde audiovisual techniques appeared in mainstream media, as music video crossed over with more popular television. While in many cases, young filmmakers schooled in film history as well as film-making experimented with new audiovisual technology, in some cases, seasoned avant-garde artists moved into a more lucrative area with potential for larger audiences, although retaining their marginal aesthetic sense.
